Säätiön hallituksen puheenjohtajan Timo Viherkentän puhe apurahojen jakojuhlassa 21.1.2019

Hyvät apurahojen saajat, arvoisat kutsuvieraat, Ladies and gentlemen!

A warm welcome to Juho Vainio Foundation’s annual celebration of new research grants. This event will be mostly in Finnish but in these opening remarks, I will say a few words in English as well.

Our foundation is the biggest Finnish foundation focussing on financing research and activities that promote public health and healthy lifestyles. The main way to carry out this is dealing out research grants. This happens once a year and it is of course the original reason for us being here today. We have been increasing the overall amount of grants over the years and I am pleased to tell that for 2019 we are providing 1.5 million euros to 82 individuals and research teams. About half of these are for doctoral thesis work but there are many grants for post-doctoral work and different projects, too.

All of you here with positive decisions can of course be glad for the money. But you can also be proud for being successful in the competition for grants. The quality of applications - overall more than 400 – has once again been high, and each application has been thoroughly scrutinized by our academically first class grant committee chaired by professor Jussi Huttunen.

Our funds are based on the generous bequeath by Juho Vainio in 1960s. Juho Vainio was a successful real estate businessman with public health close to his heart, I have come across many times people thinking that our benefactor was the late Finnish songwriter with almost the same name, Juha Watt Vainio. Because of this misunderstanding, these people have been somewhat surprised because the songwriter was known more for his music than for being a devoted prophet of healthy lifestyle.

Historically, there has of course been huge progress in many areas of public health both globally and also in Finland. In recent weeks, this has been discussed also with reference to late Hans Rosling’s book Factfulness which has reminded us that in contrast with the daily news flow, the world has become hugely better in many ways.

However, it is often the case that positive development is not a straight line and sometimes there are steps back, too. In the last couple of years, we have been witnessing a turn downwards in life expectancy in some countries, notably the United States. In Finland, too, life expectancy surprisingly slightly dropped two years ago. However, the newest figures were positive again.

Itse työskentelen eläkerahastosektorilla. Siellä viime vuoden alustavat tilastot paljastivat oudon seikan. Uusien työkyvyttömyyseläkkeiden määrä nousi edellisestä vuodesta peräti 10 prosentilla. Tämän nousun syyt ovat vielä paljolti epäselvät. Muissa suomalaisten terveystilaa koskevissa luvuissa ei kuitenkaan liene nähty vastaavaa heikkenemistä. Uusien työkyvyttömyyseläkkeiden määrän kasvuun on kuitenkin suhtauduttava vakavasti. Etenkin nuoremmissa ikäluokissa huomattavan suuressa osassa tapauksia työkyvyttömyyden syynä on mielenterveyden häiriöt.

In this afternoon’s program we have a number of short presentations on important topics. For each of us, some presentations may be closer to our area of expertise while others are somewhat more remote. However, I am confident that both categories will be very interesting. This event is also intended to be a platform for meeting old and new colleagues. So welcome once again and have a fruitful and nice afternoon!
