Hyvät
apurahojen saajat, arvoisat kutsuvieraat, Ladies and gentlemen!
A warm welcome to
Juho Vainio Foundation’s annual celebration of new research grants. This event
will be mostly in Finnish but in these brief opening remarks, I will say a few
words in English as well.
Our foundation is
the biggest Finnish foundation dedicated to financing research and activities
that promote public health and healthy lifestyles.
The main way to carry out this is awarding research grants. This is done once a
year and it is of course the basic reason for us being here today. Our
foundation has been increasing the overall amount of grants over the years and
I am pleased to tell that for 2020 we are providing 1.5 million euros to 74
individuals and research teams. About half of these are for doctoral thesis
work but there are many grants for post-doctoral work and different
projects, too. Out of these decisions, two are large grants of 100 000
euros.
All of you here
who are recipients of grants can of course be glad for the money – but also proud.
According to our grant committee which has thoroughly scrutinized the
applications, both the number and the quality of applications was especially
high this year. And as our committee is composed of academically top class
experts, there is no reason to doubt this characterisation. So you who have
made it through the competition of more than 440 applications can certainly
congratulate yourselves.
The real estate
developer Juho Vainio established our foundation which
carries his name soon 60 years ago. Juho Vainio was a successful businessman but
he also had public health close to his heart. We in the foundation are proud to
be able to promote research on this area in a meaningful way. The financing of
our grants is still for the most part based on rental income from the very same
four houses in the centre of Helsinki that Juho Vainio left behind.
Yksi
leimaa antava piirre säätiömme apurahapolitiikassa on myöntöjen kohdistuminen
eri tieteenaloille, joita yhdistää säätiön tarkoitus: kansanterveyden ja
terveiden elintapojen edistäminen. Keskeiset tuettavat tieteenalat ovat
lääketiede, ravitsemustiede ja liikuntatiede. Näille aloille ei ole virallisia
tai epävirallisia kiintiöitä apurahojen jakautumisessa vaan jakauma on
seurausta hakemuskohtaisesta arvioinnista. Tämän mukaisesti jakauma myös
vaihtelee jonkin verran vuosittain.
Olemme
kuitenkin viime vuosina valinneet yhden erityisen painopistealueen, johon olemme
There has of
course been huge progress in many areas of public health both globally and also
in Finland. This is absolutely one of the most important developments in the
history of mankind. However, as in many areas, there are sometimes steps back
in the development of public health too. It is getting quite clear that today’s
ways of life tend to involve some elements which have adverse effects on some
aspects of health.
During the latter
half of the decade that just ended, there have been perhaps surprising findings
of decrease in life expectancy in a number of countries, especially in the
United States but also in the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands. There
is no single reason for this development. As we know, one big factor in many
countries is increasing overweight and obesity. According to the OECD, more
than half of the population is overweight in almost all OECD countries and a
quarter of adults are obese. Country differences are huge: while a quarter of
Japanese were overweight in 2017, the figure exceeded 70 per cent in the United
States. The organisation estimates that between 2020 and 2050
overweight-related illnesses will reduce life expectancy by .9 to as much as 4.2
years, depending on the country.
Rankings of life
expectancy are among the few international comparisons where Finland is not at
the top. We in Juho Vainio Foundation believe we did the right thing a year ago
by giving a special prize to Professor Pertti
Mustajoki who for decades has been a strong voice in the fight against
obesity.
However, in most
countries developments are still mainly positive. Surprisingly strong figures
come from Russia where life expectancy has increased at an almost unbelievable
pace of five years during a ten-year period – at the same time when, according
to the WHO, alcohol consumption has been reduced by half.
Itse
sosiaaliturvan piiriin, johon he kuuluvatkin. Työkyvyttömyyseläkkeiden määrän ja
syiden kehitystä on kuitenkin seurattava tarkoin niin käytännön ennaltaehkäisyn
kuin politiikkatoimienkin suuntaamiseksi. Etenkin nuoremmissa ikäluokissa
huomattavan suuressa osassa tapauksia työkyvyttömyyden syynä ovat
mielenterveyden häiriöt.
Vuosi
sitten tässä tilaisuudessa kannustin läsnä olleita pohtimaan entistä
aktiivisemmin keinoja, joilla tieteen tuloksia saatettaisiin entistä tehokkaammin
laajempaan tietoon. Mielestäni tällä on aivan erityinen merkitys, kun on kyse
kansanterveyttä edistävästä tutkimuksesta. Korostuneesti tämä
koskee sellaista monien täälläkin olevien tutkimusta, joka liittyy suoraan
ihmisten elintapoihin. Vaikkapa ravitsemustieteellisen ja liikuntatieteellisen
tutkimuksen löydöksillä on usein annettavaa meille kaikille arkielämässä.
Minulla on ilo osoittaa erityiset
kiitokset professori Jussi Huttuselle,
apurahalautakunnan johdossa. On vakava understatement,
