Vuoden 2018 apurahojen jakotilaisuus  – tilaisuuden avaus

Hyvät apurahojen saajat, arvoisat kutsuvieraat, Ladies and gentlemen!

A warm welcome to Juho Vainio Foundation’s annual celebration of new scholarships. In these opening remarks, I will say a few words in English and some in Finnish.

In 2025, there will be 7 countries on earth where the share of people aged 60 or more exceeds 30 per cent. Finland is going to be one of them. Inasmuch as the number of 60 year old citizens is high because of high life expectancy, it is good news. Instead, if the large share or 60 + people is a result of declining age cohorts, it is perhaps not something to strive at.  Unfortunately, the reason for Finland being in this group is the latter one of diminishing cohorts.

Over the last decades, life expectancy has gone up remarkably in most countries. The promotion of public health and healthy lifestyles – which is the very purpose of our foundation – has played an important role in this development. Healthier nutrition, regular exercise and abandoning smoking are among the key elements here. Topics such as these are also very important for us when we decide on what research projects are to be supported with our grants.

Although longevity has been going up around the world, we have been witnessing some disturbing developments lately. Particularly in the United States, the most recent statistics exhibit an upward turn in mortality, much because of reasons having to do with lifestyles. Although in a much smaller scale, we have seen similar signs in some other countries as well, including the UK and even Finland. This is certainly a development deserving close attention.

While life expectancy is a key figure when developments in health are measured, differences and developments of public health shall not be reduced to just this figure. Among other people, the Nobel laureate in economics, Professor Angus Deaton has repeatedly reminded us that it is also important to pay attention to the quality of life while we are alive – and not just to the length of our lives.

Health is of course not the only element in the quality of life. In a recent twitter poll, half of the respondents answered that they would not like to have three extra years of life if the price would be that they would from now on only have a 3g internet connection. However, I can assure you that our foundation is not planning a strategic shift from promoting health to building faster internet connections.

Kuluvana vuonna säätiö on laajentamassa tieteellisen toiminnan tukemisen muotoja järjestämällä yhdessä Duodecimin kanssa kesäkuussa Sannäsissa huomattavan kansainvälisen seminaarin teemalla Advancing behaviour change intervention research to promote public health.

I wish you all an interesting and hopefully also nice afternoon, hearing about actual research topics and recent scientific developments as well as meeting colleagues. And enjoying some music and food too. Welcome!
